How to Test for Dead Pixels Step by Step
To test for dead pixels reliably, control the easy sources of confusion first. Then scan simple fullscreen fields in a repeatable order and describe what stays fixed instead of forcing a diagnosis from one background.
- Let the display settle into normal use. Use the device at a normal brightness in an ordinary viewing environment first. Extreme darkness or maximum brightness can emphasize panel effects that are not representative of daily use.
- Inspect and clean conservatively. Turn off the display if its manufacturer recommends that for cleaning. Use only materials and fluid guidance appropriate for its coating; never press, rub, tap, heat, disassemble, or loosen anything to influence a pixel.
- Check resolution and scaling. When practical, use the panel’s native resolution and a normal browser zoom. Operating-system scaling does not invalidate solid fields, but it can change fine grid patterns and make coordinate documentation less direct.
- Remove obvious reflections. Reposition lights or blinds, then look from your normal centered viewing position. A bright reflection on black can imitate a stuck point, while a dust shadow can imitate a dark one on white.
- Launch controlled color fields. Start with black and white, then red, green, and blue. Use fullscreen from the explicit control so the browser does not cover the diagnostic surface.
- Scan a consistent route. Divide the display mentally into rows or quadrants. Move slowly enough to inspect the center, corners, and edges without losing the location of a suspect point.
- Separate a point from an area. One pixel-sized mark behaves differently from clouding, an edge glow, a band, mura, local-dimming halos, image retention, or burn-in. Record area effects separately.
- Retest uncertainty. Change the viewing angle slightly, recheck the clean surface, return browser zoom to 100%, and repeat the same fields. Do not use rapid flashing or physical manipulation as a promised repair.
- Document without overstating. If contacting a retailer or manufacturer, note the screen coordinate, visible fields, normal viewing distance, and device model. Consult the specific current policy; there is no universal return or warranty threshold.

How to distinguish a pixel from dust
First keep a suspected mark on a bright field, then move your head slightly rather than touching the panel. Dust or a surface speck can appear to shift over the pixel grid, change edge softness, or catch light. A panel pixel remains registered to the image. Safe cleaning may remove a surface mark, but an unchanged point still needs comparison across RGB fields before you call it dead or stuck.
Notes for monitors, laptops, phones, tablets, and TVs
The visual method is shared, but the viewing context changes. A laptop or monitor can usually present the browser field directly at close working distance. A phone or tablet may have a screen protector with trapped dust. A TV should be checked from a sensible distance as well as up close; local dimming, panel processing, reflections, and viewing angle can dominate a dark field. Touch controls remain available when a keyboard is not connected.
What to record if you need support
- The approximate coordinate or distance from two screen edges.
- Whether the point is visible on black, white, red, green, blue, and normal content.
- Whether cleaning, a viewing-angle check, browser zoom, or another input changed it.
- A photo only if requested, with awareness that camera focus, moiré, and exposure can distort tiny pixels.
